THE KOREAN WAR MEMORIAL
This
educational history museum in Yongsan tells you everything
you need to know about the Korean war. At the entrance of
the museum is a towering missile sculpture (reminiscent
of a huge phallus) surrounded by warring men. To me it seems
very appropriate, because without testosterone would wars
ever be fought? Without men willing to sacrifice their lives
for their ideals, would South Korea be the Asian tiger that
it is today?
There's a somber ceremonious hall leading into the museum
that honors all the men who died so righteously. Inside
are different rooms in which explain the exact chronology
of the Korean war. There are light box displays, films,
sculptures, and photographs. Creepy wax displays of battles
that occurred and wax displays of what living conditions
were like for the soldiers are on display throughout the
museum. There are also several interesting bronze sculptures
depicting heroes of the war. There are displays of uniforms
people wore, and actual documents which were signed during
the conflict. In certain rooms, you can watch surround sound
movies of battle scenes. What was shocking for me was a light
display which showed the number of North Korean troops vs.
South Korean. The South Korean army was grossly outnumbered
both in men and artillery, yet with the help and protection
of US troops, South Korea managed to prevail and become
the developed nation that it is today. I don't think enough
people remember or are aware of the fact. This museum's
importance lies in the fact that it reminds people of this
alliance.
The large military room shows the comparison between both
ally and enemy army and air forces equipment, as well as
the parachute scene of an air borne soldier, helicopters,
and scout planes in the air. Cool! One of the highlights
of the War memorial is the outdoor display of all the weapons
and vehicles which were used during the war. Who knew that
these death machines could be so much fun for kids? You
can actually go into some of the tanks and planes and feel
what it must have been like for the soldiers.
The only drawback to this museum is that many of the displays
were not translated into English. Though war is never a
joyful topic, this memorial honors the heroes of the war
and really enlightens you on the situation that divided
the Koreas. This museum is extremely interesting. Give yourself
a good three hours to read everything on the displays.
