Are you bored, lonely or looking for companionship? Then why not go on a date with a dog? At Bau Haus, there’s a lot of tail chasing going on, but it’s not the kind that you typically see at bars around town.
Bau Haus is a novel cafe in Hongdae where you’re encouraged to bring your dog and kick back with cuddly canines over café lattes. Don’t have a dog? No worries. At any given time, around 15 cute pooches roam freely around the café. The dogs act as your companion for the time that you’re there and you don’t even have to tip them! This place is perfect for dog owners or dog lovers who are too busy to have their own pooch in Seoul.
As you ride the elevator up, you can hear the happy sounds of canines playing. When you arrive, furry four-legged friends of every breed rush up to welcome you to the cafe. There are labradors, huskies, cocker spaniels, beagles, lassies, maltese and other mutts.
It funny to see how each dog has its own unique personality. You might get your ear chewed on by the hyperactive beagle or the tiny maltese might crawl onto your lap as if to say “protect me!” There’s also an enormous husky who is as big and as regal as a thoroughbred horse. If he stands on his hind legs he’s about six feet tall! The lethargic cocker spaniel that looks like a wise old grandfather might come have a nap next to you or, the frisky poodle might just wonder what the corners of your table taste like. The dogs go under the tables, hang out on the seat next to you or walk along the windowsills. It’s absolutely adorable!
Bau Haus has at least 5 employees there at a time tending to the dogs and taking care of all the incidental mess that occurs when you’ve got a bunch of dogs roaming around. They are constantly mopping up the vinyl seats and floors and spraying Febreeze to freshen the air. Having said that, it does take a few minutes to adjust to the dog smell at the café.
Bauhaus café works well because it caters to a person’s basic need for love and attention. They don’t call dogs “man’s best friend” for no reason. The place has been around for 5 years and most of the dogs belong to the owner. The dogs are all very well-behaved, but you may get the occasional butt sniffer, leg-humper or ear-chewer. (Hey, it sounds like a night out in Itaewon!) There are many customers who regularly bring their dogs. You can even post your cutest dog photos on the bulletin board. They also sell pet paraphernalia and there are even some toys (like frisbees) for use inside the café.
