FREEBIRD

Free Bird is one of the nicest live music venues in Hongdae. Instead of being in a claustrophobic basement, it's on the second floor of a building just off parking lot street. Because there are big windows lining one wall of this venue, there's more of a of feeling of space. The walls of the venue are painted black with exposed aluminum- looking pipes on the ceiling. Various colored lights strike a different mood depending on the type of band playing. The stage is fairly big compared to Hongdae's other live music venues and the background of the stage has a retro-looking wall. The intimate layout is also great for watching live music. There are chairs and stools which are directly in front of the stage and booths with leather banquettes line the outer edges of the venue. There's a small bar accessible at the entrance and the DJ and sound booth is in the back part of the room. Freebird is known mostly as a rock club, but they also seem to feature some pop, jazz or funk type of bands. On the walls are autographs of famous Korean bands who've either played here or have been to the club. This venue is part of the Sound Day Club circuit. To get there, walk from Starbucks at Hongdae station exit 6, down parking lot street towards the Buy The Way intersection. When you see the white Su norebang building on the corner, turn left onto that alley and hang your very first right on the smaller alley that Catchlight/Cafe Libro is on. Freebird is at the end of the short alley.
