You walk towards the sounds of salsa music. You are drawn to it like a worm to a sidewalk when it rains. You walk downstairs. Hopefully you will make it out alive. Gachi reverberates so much energy, you might get tired just watching. The owner, Lee Eun Kyoung, is also the teacher for Latin dance and belly dance. Unlike other club owners who sit in the VIP lounge sipping drinks with the stars, this girl is shaking her hips like Shakira all around the dance floor. She has created an atmosphere that yells, “Get up and dance!” Their DJ, DJ Dancer is one of the better-known DJs in the Korean salsa scene.

Gachi just had its third year anniversary and hosted numerous performances. The popular Salsa band Essencia played and a few Latino players mentioned they were impressed by level of the Korean dancers. One song lasted w-a-a-a-a-y too long for those trying to keep up with the fast beat. Possibly because they were hypnotized by the audience...? One will never know for sure.

To get to Gachi, go to Apgujeoung Station and go out exit 5. Walk passed six streets. Look for Matilda Club and Bar on the seventh street. Turn left, look for the red and white sign, turn into a worm and hope you survive.
