JAZZ STORY
This popular live music venue in Samcheong dong has been around 1995. Even though this place has been open for over a decade, it's never gone out of fashion because the music is consistently awesome and because the concept of the place is so unique.
The building itself looks like some kind of bomb shelter out of a futuristic movie like 'Mad Max'. The interior looks like a deconstructed junkyard full of recycled treasures.
There's actual duct tape holding the chairs together. Sometimes your drink comes in a measuring cup instead of in a glass! One corner is filled with styrofoam boxes that look as though they might once been used for stereo equipement. There are all kinds of visual suprises at Jazz Story. To truly appreciate quirkiness of the place, you have to go there at night when it's candle-lit and even the sculptured mounds of wax drippings become part of the decor. The music isn't really jazz per se. It's more like cool torch music, or lounge music. You might hear Jewel, the Beatles or Marvin Gaye for example. The house band will wow you with their smooth voices, acoustic guitar skills and melodic piano playing.. It's a very beatnik kind of place. Even the grey-haired owner sports a goatee and looks hip.
Jazz Story is a famous place yet at the same time when you go there, it feels like you're discovering a hidden gem. Perhaps it isn't super packed all the time precisely because it's somewhat isolated in Samcheong-dong.
