MACONDO

Remember that scene in Dirty Dancing when Baby walks into the resort employee’s area and sees them all dancing? A room full of people completely engaged in a passionate dance. It’s late. People have been up for a long time. They are sweaty and smiling. You can go there… here… in Korea! Well, with less pelvic thrusts and you don’t have to carry a watermelon. While you walk downstairs, you might wonder if anyone is inside because it is so quiet. But that heavy door swings open and that small room is pumping a Latin song with frilly dresses spinning, arms flying, and feet flinging.

Macondo is the salsa club where everybody goes. There are a number of salsa clubs in Seoul, and it is easy for most people to have their favorite they frequent. But, Macondo prides itself on setting up the un-community: the place where everyone can go and enjoy dancing liberally without the members-only feeling. On the weekends, many go to Macondo right away, but most make it their final destination because the club doesn’t close until 4am (and is usually packed until then).

To get to Macondo, take exit 5 at Hongik University Station (Hongdae Station). Turn right immediately. The next intersection will be a 5-way intersection. Take the one that is at 10 o’clock. You should see Mocondo’s big red sign down the street.
