WAZWAN

This clean, brightly lit restaurant at the foot of the Masjid Mosque in Itaewon has some of the best Indian food in town! There's a smattering of dodgy Indian restaurants in the vicinity of the ‘hooker hill’ area, and I was quite skeptical when friends suggested we eat at Wazwan. Much to the delight of my tastebuds, Wazwan lived up to it’s delicious reputation.
The decor at Wazwan is very simple. They have a few rugs hung on the walls and a few Middle Eastern-looking accents. There are shiny festive tablecloths and the flourescent lighting is a little bright. In the background, there's a TV playing the latest Bollywood film. However, this restaurant isn't about dining in a fancy setting and eating mediocre food. It's about eating fantastic quality Indian food!
Wazwan has quite an extensive menu and it may be difficult to choose. To start off, you can order a lassi, a yummy yogurt based drink which is typical in India. Basically the menu consists of chicken, mutton (lamb), paneer and vegetarian choices. (Paneer is Indian cheese which tastes a bit like ricotta, but has the consistency of tofu or feta cheese). There are different sauces and curries to accompany the meats and veggies. For example, you can get chicken, dal (lentils) or paneer makhani. Makhani is a tomato cream based curry with Indian spices. You can also get veggie, chicken or mutton biriyani. Birianyi is a curry made with a mixture of Indian spices such as coriander, cumin, cardamom, onion, garlic ginger, cinnamon and cloves. You can also get shrimp, chicken and mutton masala. Masala is a curry made with aromatic Indian spices, red chilies, tomato and garam masala.
You can get all the Indian favorites such as Samosas, Seesh Kebab, Chicken Tikka, Butter Chicken, Chicken Vindaloo, Rogan Josh (lamb and tomato with special spices). To accompany your meal, you can have saffron rice, tandoori roti, onion kulcha, butter or garlic naan. The naan at Wazwan is especially tasty!! It’s flaky, and crispy as opposed to the soggy or doughy naan available at many of the other Indian places around town.
If you just can't choose one thing, you can order a set menu which includes a variety of dishes. There are set menus available for 1-2 people or 4-6 people. The set menu for 4-6 people includes all you can eat naan and it's a copious amount of food. Aside from the food, the best thing about Wazwan is the affordable prices. You can feast like royalty without breaking the bank!
