Hongdae Free Market
By Hannah Stuart-Leach, 2009-12-01
Hongdae park is home to all things creative; a weekend
meeting spot for local students, expats and lovers of music and art. By
night people gather, Cass in hand, to listen to bands and watch
performers. But by day, on Saturdays and Sundays, the Free Market takes
over.
All kinds of trinkets and accessories can be found: silk purses,
notebooks, hats and beads. And at the more frivolous end of the scale,
you can pick up anything from bottle top keyrings to colourfully illustrated stickers.
It’s a great place to go for gifts, or if you want a little something
for yourself that won't be seen replicated in a million other shops.
You’ll notice a number of stall holders selling silver jewellery.
Some fairly innovative pieces are available, and given that most of
them are handmade, they’re good value too.
It’s also a fine place to go if you’re looking for reasonably
priced, original artwork. The young and friendly artists are highly
approachable and keen to chat. But there’s never any pressure to
purchase if all you want to do is browse.
If you fancy making a piece of art out of yourself, then you can
also get a self portrait done. Several artists offer this service and
styles vary wildly from abstract gel pen creations to cute and quirky
chalk sketches.
There are some lovely arts and crafts on offer, but the organisers
don’t want to place too much emphasis on what you can buy. According to
their pamphlet: “The Free Market is an ‘open market’ event where fine
artists meet and exchange ideas with visitors to create real works of
art.”
But whether you wish to engage in discussion or just admire from
afar, the vibrant atmosphere and unique produce of the Free Market,
makes for an afternoon well spent.
